Drug Uses
Desyrel is used for treatment of depression. It may also be used for relief of an anxiety disorder (e.g., sleeplessness, tension), chronic pain. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Taken
Use Desyrel as directed by your doctor. Take Desyrel after a meal or light snack. It may take 1 to 4 weeks for Desyrel to work. Do not stop taking Desyrel without checking with your doctor.

Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Desyrel, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Desyrel, if you have heart disease including irregular heartbeat or have had a heart attack, a history of depression or suicidal tendencies, you are scheduled to have surgery, consume alcoholic beverages, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Desyrel while you are pregnant. Desyrel is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you use Desyrel, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Desyrel. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not take Desyrel if you are taking sodium oxybate (GHB). Children and teenagers who take Desyrel may be at increased risk for suicidal thoughts or actions. Adults may also be affected. The risk may be greater in patients who have had suicidal thoughts or actions in the past. The risk may also be greater in patients who have had bipolar (manic–depressive) illness, or if their family members have had it. Watch patients who take Desyrel closely. Contact the doctor at once if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood, anxious, restless, or irritable behavior, panic attacks, or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. Contact the doctor right away if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur. Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Desyrel before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery. Desyrel should not be used in children younger than 6 years old. Safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed. Desyrel may sometimes cause a prolonged, painful erection. This could happen even when you are not having sex. If this is not treated right away, it could lead to permanent sexual problems, such as impotence. Contact your doctor right away if this occurs.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are- Blurred vision, constipation, decreased appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, general body discomfort, headache, incoordination, light–headedness, muscle aches/pains, nausea, nervousness, sleeplessness, and stomach pain, stuffy nose, swelling of the skin, tiredness, and tremors. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately- allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), blood in urine, chest pain, fainting, hallucinations, irregular heartbeat, light–headedness when rising from a lying or seated position, prolonged, inappropriate, or painful erections, seizures, shortness of breath, stroke, vomiting.

Storage
Store Desyrel at 68 – 77 °F (20 – 25 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Desyrel out of the reach of children.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Desyrel overdose are- loss of consciousness, low blood pressure, seizures, slow heart rate, slow, rapid or irregular pulse, slowed breathing, unusual drowsiness or dizziness, vomiting, weakness.

More Information
Desyrel may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. These effects may worsen if Desyrel is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Desyrel with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Desyrel should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
